Take It From Our Patients: We Make Braces Simple
It’s natural for people to be a little nervous about having braces. What will it feel like? How long will I have to have them? Will it hurt? Here at Rockland Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics, we work with the kids we treat to not only ensure a lifetime of beautiful smiles, but also to address any questions or concerns they may have on their minds.
When the kids and teens we treat first find out they need braces, one of the first things they’re likely to notice is just how many other kids their age have braces, too. They certainly won’t be alone!
The process of getting braces for the first time is fairly simple and painless. It can usually be done in one visit, though sometimes it may take two. Kids will feel some pressure when the braces are tightened to begin the orthodontic treatment, but it’s not painful.
Sometimes spacers are necessary to deal with crowding. Teeth and jaws can become a little sore as your teeth move, but the discomfort is quite manageable.
Your child will then come in once a month to have their braces tightened as the treatment plan continues. Most people have braces for about 1 – 3 years.
Our staff will talk with your child to answer questions and include them in the process every step of the way. We are committed to including them in the decision making whenever possible so they feel more at ease.

f you see people with braces, you’ll realize that you are not alone in your endeavor. You may initially feel the challenge of this dental treatment. It may be difficult to eat and speak. Don’t feel bad because this is just temporary. Soon, you will get used to them and eventually, you can tolerate the pain when they are adjusted. You just need to follow what your dentist recommends and take your oral hygiene seriously to avoid any future dental problems.
